After nine years of dominance, 1966 marked the end of the Impala model holding top of the line honors. The Caprice was introduced in '65 as a four-door hardtop only. In '66 the Caprice Custom was reintroduced as the Chevrolet Caprice the top of the line Chevy! The '66 Impala featured more chrome both inside and out. The Impala line was little by little losing its fame and popularity to other Chevrolet models. The new power house for 1966 was the 427 big block. This engine was designed basically for the Corvette line, but was available as an option on the full size passenger car side as well. The Chevrolet Impala convertible was the number two best selling convertible for 1966.
